About this tool

The Ratio & Proportion Calculator is a versatile dual-function tool designed to handle two common mathematical tasks involving ratios. It's incredibly useful in various fields, from scaling recipes in the kitchen and interpreting maps to adjusting ingredients in a chemical formula or comparing financial metrics. The calculator is split into two convenient tabs: 'Simplify Ratio' and 'Solve for X'. In the 'Simplify Ratio' tab, you can reduce any ratio to its simplest integer form. To do this, enter the two numbers that make up your ratio into the 'Value A' and 'Value B' fields. For example, to simplify the ratio 25:100, you would enter 25 and 100. After clicking 'Simplify', the tool will find the greatest common divisor and reduce the ratio accordingly, displaying the result '1 : 4'. This is perfect for understanding the fundamental relationship between two quantities. The 'Solve for X' tab is used for solving proportions. A proportion is an equation that sets two ratios as equal, in the form a : b = c : d. This is useful when you know three of the four values and need to find the missing one. The interface clearly lays out the proportion with four input fields. Simply enter the three values you know and leave the field for the unknown value blank. For instance, if you know that 2 : 5 = 8 : d, you would enter 2, 5, and 8, and leave 'd' empty. Clicking 'Calculate' will solve for the missing value and display it, making it effortless to scale quantities up or down while maintaining the same relationship.
